Designer of the Herman Miller Scissor Chair, Ward Bennett, took inspiration from the hammock-style chaise designs of the mid-nineteenth century for this chair.
The first versions of the Scissor appeared in 1964 and by 1968, Bennett had refined the design, settling on softened rectangular sections. Now in 2014 the Scissor chair is available to purchase in the UK.
Scissor is available in a wide array of wood or metal frame finishes; it can be upholstered in leather or textile.
Ward Bennett is considered the first American to use industrial materials for home furnishings, well before the high-tech look of the 1970s became popular. He designed more than 150 chairs, many of which have become classics, such as the Landmark chair, reintroduced by Geiger in 1993.
