The design career of Verner Panton reached its first peak toward the end of the 1950s. With a furniture series based on simple geometric shapes, Panton anticipated elements of Pop Art, while also emulating the elegance of Scandinavian Modernism in the execution of the bases. The most famous designs from this series are the Cone Chair and the Heart Cone Chair.
The contemporaneously designed Vitra C1 armchair marks Verner Panton's first use of a spherical section for one of his seats. Mounted with a slight tilt on a swivel base, the upholstered seat shell is astonishingly comfortable - for leaning back in a relaxed posture as well as sitting upright.
Verner Panton was a master of the fluid, futuristic style of 1960s design which introduced the Pop aesthetic to furniture and interiors. He is often thought to be one of the most influential Danish designers of the 20th century.
